A phone screen shows the Bluesky Social app on the App Store with a rating of 4.5 stars and an age rating of 12+, indicating its rise in popularity.

Highlights:

  • Bluesky gained over 2 million new users in four days following X’s ban in Brazil, with downloads up by 1,018,952%.
  • The surge in user activity led to performance issues as the platform tried to accommodate the influx of new users.
  • Bluesky’s engagement metrics also increased, with likes, follows, and reposts all experiencing substantial growth.

Bluesky has experienced a significant surge in user growth following X’s ban in Brazil over compliance with local laws. On Friday, the company announced it had gained 500,000 new users in just two days, as users sought alternative platforms amid X’s shutdown.

The company said on Tuesday that it has added approximately 2.4 million new Brazilian users within four days. Bluesky has now risen to the top of Brazil’s app charts, surpassing Meta’s Threads.

The app has also gained more signups than the similar decentralized platform Mastodon, which recorded 4,200 new users from Brazil.

Over the weekend, the app’s downloads have increased by 10,584%, with Brazil accounting for 1,018,952% of this growth.

Users have reported encountering errors due to the increase in downloads and signups.

Increase in Bluesky’s engagement metrics

Bluesky has also seen a significant increase in engagement. Likes, follows, and reposts on the platform have all risen.

Likes surged from 13 million to 104.6 million, follows grew from 1.4 million to 100.8 million, and reposts increased from 1.3 million to 11 million.

Bluesky’s growth outside Brazil

Bluesky’s growth in downloads in Brazil has also boosted its global presence, driving a 584% increase in worldwide downloads.

The platform has gained traction in 22 countries where it once had limited visibility, with the U.S., Portugal, the U.K., Canada, and Spain having the highest number of downloads or app installations.

Portugal, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, and Romania are among the top countries with the most download growth.

Bluesky was launched in 2019 as a decentralized platform. The app allows users to own their data, control their privacy, and make content-related decisions, unlike X, which handles content moderation centrally.
