Apple releases iOS 18.2 beta with ChatGPT integration and AI-powered tools
iOS 18.2 follows the rollout of iOS 18.1 launching next week
Highlights:
- Siri can now handle complex queries through ChatGPT.
- Users will have access to apps like Image Playground and Genmoji.
- iOS 18.2 extends Apple Intelligence features to more English-speaking countries.
Apple has released a beta version of its iOS 18.2. The new release features AI-powered features as part of its Apple Intelligence suite, including integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Apple’s iOS 18.2 will introduce the next Apple Intelligence features. It expands Apple Intelligence support to more English-speaking regions. This includes Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK. Unlike iOS 18.1, which will only support U.S. English.
iOS 18.2 beta is now available only to users in Apple’s beta program. It works with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models. The full public release of iOS 18.2 is expected to arrive in December.
What’s new in the iOS 18.2 beta
ChatGPT integration
Earlier this year, Apple announced that ChatGPT would be coming to iPhones. ChatGPT is now integrated directly into Siri and Apple’s writing tools. Users will be able to access ChatGPT through Siri.
The ChatGPT integration will let Siri handle more complex queries by sending them to ChatGPT. Users will be asked for permission before Siri uses ChatGPT. No OpenAI account is needed to access this tool.
ChatGPT will also be available in text fields to generate content and as part of Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature. This tool allows the camera to identify objects or translate signs in real time.
AI image generator
Apple has also introduced ‘Image Playground,’ a standalone app to generate images from text prompts. The app lets users create or edit images with custom options. It can suggest edits, like adding objects or costumes, based on photos or messages.
Genmoji
Apple’s iOS 18.2 will also introduce Genmoji. This tool will enable users to create personalized emojis based on text prompts. Users can also generate emoji versions of their friends using data from their photos.
Image Wand
‘Image Wand’ will let users remove objects or distractions from their photos. Users can remove objects from images without affecting the background of the image.
AI-powered writing tools
Apple’s AI-powered writing tools, first launched in iOS 18.1, will also be accessible on Apple’s iOS 18.2. The feature can now rewrite, proofread, and suggest content in apps like Mail, Notes, and Pages.
Apple Intelligence
In September, Apple announced that it would introduce a Google Lens-like ‘visual intelligence’ feature for visual searches and ChatGPT queries to its iPhone 16.
This feature has been in preview for developers and will be officially available to the public next week with the release of iOS 18.1.
